All whole-home generators require routine maintenance. The industry recommendation for the region is to schedule maintenance twice a year. Schedule in the spring and again in the fall. During that appointment, your electrician will perform a multipoint inspection and clean the equipment.
Your electrician will also address normal wear and tear and may recommend preventative repairs. In between checkups, you should monitor generator health and watch for signs that your unit needs professional service. Each month, you should test the system and check the oil level. Don’t ignore any odd sounds or unusual smells. Watch for system alerts and low battery levels. Other items to look for include visible enclosure damage, slow startups, low power flow, and any fluid leaks.
A standby generator can provide you many benefits:
Enjoy hot meals
Avoid food losses
Improve property value
Stay connected to the internet
Potential home insurance discounts
If installing a generator, the first step is to consider the fuel type. Many area homeowners have generators that run on diesel fuel. This can present challenges during emergencies when there’s high demand. Perhaps the most convenient and affordable option is natural gas. If you lack access to natural gas, liquid propane is an alternative. You can store LP on your property in a tank and schedule deliveries as needed. There are also solar- and battery-powered generators.
Another consideration is size, and backup generators are available in a wide range of capacities. How large a generator your home requires depends on your goals. The smallest and cheapest generators provide enough power for your refrigerators, HVAC equipment, and lighting. Midsize units let you selectively operate computing devices, modems, routers, stoves, kitchen appliances, and so forth. The largest generators allow you to continue using your home as if the power never went out.
